Cromwell: Golden hills, Lakes, Orchards, and Historic Charm

1. Lake Dunstan and Old Cromwell Heritage Precinct
At sunrise, Lake Dunstan becomes a glassy mirror for the Pisa Range, creating one of the most stunning reflection shots in Central Otago. In summer, the blue skies and calm waters feel almost Mediterranean. It’s a dreamy spot for proposals and engagement sessions. The heritage percint has stone buildings, weathered timber, and cobblestone streets give this place an old-world charm you won’t find anywhere else. It’s perfect for vintage-inspired portraits, and in the late afternoon, golden light spills between the buildings for a cinematic touch.

2. Pisa Moorings & Vineyards
With rows of vines stretching to the lake’s edge and mountain reflections behind you, Pisa Moorings feels like a hidden slice of Tuscany. Best in late summer when the vines are full and lush — an incredible spot for a romantic couple shoot.

3. Cromwell Walk – 45th Parallel
A short but sweet hike up onto a local Cromwell hill that has insane 360 degree views. Great in the morning or evening for that golden light.

Bannockburn: The heart of the desert.
Desert Light, Gold Mining History and Vineyards.

1. Bannockburn Inlet
This little inlet on Lake Dunstan offers glassy reflections and uninterrupted mountain views. In winter, mist rolls off the water for a moody, intimate vibe.

2. Bannockburn Sluicings
Once a gold mining site, the Sluicings are now an otherworldly desert-like landscape of ochre cliffs and winding walking tracks. Great if you like hiking and a unique landscape. Stunning in the warm glow of golden hour.

3. Bannockburn local spot
This stunning location is a short walk from a carpark, making it the perfect spot for a surprise proposal or couple shoot. If you like walking it’s a great place to recommend to your partner and then to drop a knee without them cluing onto it. As a local Central Otago photographer this is my favourite spot for a couple shoot in Bannockburn.
